OTWONO LABS / NOTEBOOK

Design a small experiment

Learn one step at a time, with examples, practice and a place for your questions.

Start this lesson

An introductory planning exercise. Use a safe everyday task, such as comparing two ways of organizing a workspace. This is not a guide to hazardous laboratory work.

Ask one question

Choose a narrow question and state what you expect to observe. Keep the prediction separate from the result.

Choose what to compare

Define the conditions and what you will measure. Write down relevant differences that you cannot control.

Set a stopping point

Decide the time and effort you can spend before starting. Avoid changing the success rule simply because the early result is inconvenient.

Record what happened

Keep observations, deviations and unsuccessful attempts. A result that does not support the prediction still tells you something about this test.

Explain the limit

Describe what the test can and cannot establish. A small test may guide a next question without justifying a broad conclusion.

Try it

Draft a one page plan containing a question, comparison, measurement, stopping point and limitations. Ask another person whether they could repeat it from your notes.

Scope and corrections

Original practical guidance, not a completed experiment. No external dataset was used. Updated September 2026.
