Design a useful practice task

Learn one step at a time, with examples, practice and a place for your questions.

Original introductory guidance from OTWONO Labs. Examples are illustrative and do not report an actual study or award learning credit.

Name the action

Choose an observable goal such as explain, compare, calculate or build. “Understand the topic” is harder to assess than “explain the difference using a new example.”

Match the task to the goal

If the goal is to compare explanations, copying a definition is not sufficient practice. Ask the learner to apply the distinction to a case they have not already seen.

Make feedback specific

Instead of only marking an answer wrong, identify the step that needs attention. Explain what a better response includes and give the learner another opportunity to use it.

Record the support used

A worked example, hint or reference can help learning. Record that help when describing the result so supported practice is not mistaken for an independent demonstration.

Try it

Pick a skill from something you studied recently. Write one goal, one new task and three features of a useful answer. Try the task before looking at the example. Note which features you met and what you would try next.
